Non-Government Organization (NGO) or Non-Profit Organization (NPO) are institutions/organizations which are non-profit making and operate independently of a Government.
The main objective of such an organization is to help and support people for their legal rights and powers in society. It works for the betterment and upliftment of socio-economically weaker section of the community with an aim to bring them in the mainstream of society and move the society towards more improved and developed way of living and existence. Thus, it brings a positive changes in society, community, areas and situations.
In India, an institution of non commercial nature for promotion of charitable activities like education, art, religion, culture etc. has to register itself:
- as a public charitable trust, or
- under Societies Registration Act,1860, or

under Section 25 of the Companies Act ,1956
